Fished below Wheeler Mar. 14-19. No shad to be found and bad west wind 3 days in a row but we still managed to boat some nice fish with shiners. Landed only 20-25 smallies the whole trip, biggest being 5-5, 4-0, 3-15, 3-9, 3-5. All were dark and stayed down all the way to the net, after which they were photo'd and released. Caught numerous wipers in 5-8 lb. range, along with some saltwaters. If things get tough it might be worth a try to size down hook size. We usually use 1-0's, but the guy doing most of the catchin' was using #4 hooks. He kept it up for 2 days before the rest of us decided it wasn't just luck. Got hooked up less and pulled free easier and never lost a fish once hooked. The last day he boated a 25 lb. salt on a #4 hook. 37 inch beast it was. Water temp was still cool, 52-54 most places. Maybe missed gangbusters by a week. Anyhow, another great Wheeler trip, looking forward to fall trip there. Thank you Alabama.
