Steve, I've been throwing a net for gizzards for twenty years. I've yet to figure out any seasonal pattern. The easiest way I've found to locate them is to watch for them flipping on the surface; but, this requires a slick surface, something I rarely encounter when Striper fishing.
I've never had any luck catching them in deep water. I don't think the net stays open long enough for that. I have, however, often found them in the late evenings along banks with smooth bottoms against which the wind has been blowing.
Anyway, good luck. Many times it's more difficult to catch the bait than the prey.
