Is it on a boat? Or is it in a shed or garage? If it's on a boat I would have to take it to the lake and run it, or at least hook up muffs to a water hose and run it. If the guys not willing to make it run for you, then it probably will never run. I had a 40hp Mariner that developed a 'rattle' that turned out to be a cracked piston, which eventually led to seizure of the engine. A seized engine of that age isn't worth what it takes to rebuild it, if you can even find the parts. But, if it runs to suit you, make sure you mix the oil into the tank and remove or disable the oil pump. Also, replace the plastic impeller on the water pump before running it for any length of time. It should last a long time if you follow these procedures.
