The small (older) bridges around Guntersville seem to have smaller pilings and they are basically square. Many of the older bridges are this way, but you can't count on it. I have never measured the widths of the pilings either, so I can't say for sure what length you really need. All I can suggest is to make sure you don't buy anything of more length than you want to have to deal with in your boat. Just guessing, but I would think 4 feet would be just about as big as I would go, but I am just guessing. You might go 5 feet and be OK too, it just depends on how big your boat is and how large an implement, of this sort, that you are willing to deal with getting it in and out of the boat, handling it while in the boat, and using it when you find your fishing spot.
