Black Crappie which predominates now in the big G like the weeds and rocks and concrete rubble if you know where any is in shallow water( im not telling) .I have seen them as shallow as 1 to 2 feet but 3 to 4 seems to be more to their liking and have found then as deep as 8 ft.They also will bed earlier than the White Crappie by a good 3 weeks,at least its been my experience with them. The white Crappie loves the wooden structure ,especially stumps and downed trees or (grin) intentionally sunk trees that are located on hard sandy/pebbly bottoms not silty. They will pretty much be in the same depths spawning as the blacks but the larger ones seem to be in deeper water(6 to 8 ft)And as I have said they are late bloomers usully spawning when the dogwoods bloom in april or a little before if its been unusualy warm, they prefer warmer water than the Black Crappie.
