By staging, I mean that they are/were moving up into areas near spawning grounds, not that the spawn was close. The water temps have to rise quite a bit before that. This staging period, I think, is when they are feeding agressively in large schools, moving in and out of shallow/deep water and very predictable with stable water levels/conditions.
On Wheeler the actual spawn usually comes or starts somewhere about the end of march, but can be much later than that depending on water temps. I think it will be much later this year given the cold weather only getting here the first of this year. The floods simply make it hard for me to want to get my boat out and from past experience, much harder to find the fish even if I do! (sigh)
