Personally, I think there are a couple of reasons. 1. I think the new size limit (14 in.) results in all the reproducing females to be over harvested leaving few to reproduce. Think about it, all those big 14+ inch fish always are full of eggs. I also fish the Tennessee River up in Tennessee and the same situation has happened there since the size limits have been imposed. 2. I think over harvest in general is a problem. I fish the subject area a lot and I don't see many fish returned to the lake once caught.
But then that is just my opinion, I'm not a fisheries biologist, just a fisherman. Wish I knew what the answer was so that we could have some good sauger fishing again. Also wish I knew that the state game and fish folks were aware of the problem and would like their input.
