In my opinion, there isn't any real "magic" temperature at which they "magically" turn on this time of year. Too many other factors like water level, current and recent rains come into play.
However, as the surface temps drop below 70, and they have recently, the crappie begin to get more active for me. Lately, they are still hugging structure and I have caught them from 3 to 9 feet deep. I haven't caught a lot of keepers, but the better fish are starting to hit a little more for some folks lately.
I have heard reports of some folks catching 15-25 keepers in the 3/4 to 1-1/4 pound range during a FULL day of fishing on Wheeler. Lots of short fish. Your mileage will vary. This warm spell has done a bad number on the fish I was catching, but I am sure that there are good crappie out there now, just waiting for someone to find them! (grin)
Good luck and good fishin'
