Right now below Wilson and Pickwick you will see dozens of boats smallmouth fishing, but hardly anyone will be throwing jigs, spinnerbaits or crankbaits. They are all drifting yellowtails (threadfin shad) and catching 20-25 fish a day. 3 to 6 pounders are common this time of year.
Get a throw net and head into the Florence Barge Harbor and look for the minnows. Fish them on 8 lb spinning rigs from the dam to the head of 7-Mile Island on Pickwick and from the Dam to Bluewater on Wilson.
That's the ticket this time of year for smallies.
If you're not set up for catching your own, you can usually buy shiners at local bait stores such as the one at McFarland Park.
Good Luck and hold on!!
