As I recall, you can search the web for Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge and find "facts" from the National Wildlife Service (NWS). They report that the gators were brought to Wheeler in the 1970's because they were an endangered species. As for food sources, I was out in a jon boat one winter may years ago in the refuge area around Triana and have never seen so many big fat beavers in my life. There was a pile of beavers huddling up that was so big, I thought we had encountered a bear when they first started to move.
You could not pay me enough money to visit that place in the summer. Just about every stick-up had a saucer sized wasp nest from the previous year, and I can only imagine the snakes!!
