For the most fun and the chance of catching a really big smallie, mid October through November is arguably the best time to "drown a minner." Its not hard to catch shad if you put in at McFarland Park in Florence. Just run upstream from the park into the old barge canal/Florence harbor and look for shad to throw a net into. With live bait, just go anywhere that looks like there ought to be fish and there probably will be. Current is a near necessity. On a good day, you could spend all day going up and down the bluffs directly across the river from McFarland. Be careful if you're not used to fishing current because there's alot of water pushed through Wilson Dam when they are running the turbines. Hope this helps.
