2 CONT As of 8/18/98 I have not yet found a census record for this
2 CONT family in 1870.  Census records exist for 1850, 1860, and 1880.
2 CONT In 1850 he is in Cherokee Co., Alabama, in 1860 he is in DeKalb
2 CONT Co., Alabama.  In the 1860 census, Charles children were:
2 CONT William, Hiram, John, and James.  His wife's name appears to be
2 CONT Jemima or Jenina.  Now in the 1880 census, the family was found
2 CONT in Wise Co., Texas.  Hiram, John, and James were in the census,
2 CONT along with Jane, and three additional children of Margaret,
2 CONT Malinda and Lemuel.  According to her death certificate,
2 CONT Malinda's place of birth is given as Miller Co.,Missouri.
2 CONT Therefore, from 1860 to 1880 Charles moved from Alabama to
2 CONT Missouri, and died somewhere in Missouri.  It could be assumed
2 CONT that since he was in his forties by the time the war started
2 CONT that he probably did not serve.  It may also be assumed that he
2 CONT may have moved his family to Missouri during the war since
2 CONT Margaret was born in Alabama in 1861, but no other children
2 CONT were born till 1866.  According to the 1880 cenus, Jane was 44,
2 CONT placing her year of birth as 1836. In the Lemuel Kennedy family
2 CONT bible, her year of birth is given as 1833, which coincides with
2 CONT the year of birth for Charles wife in the 1850 and 1860 census.
2 CONT Also, the place of birth for Charles wife is Tennessee, and
2 CONT Jane's place of birth is also Tennessee.

2 CONT Apparently the family moved to Missouri sometime between 1861
2 CONT and 1866.  Her daughter, Margaret E. was born in Alabama in
2 CONT about 1861, and her other daughter, Malinda Allie, was born in
2 CONT Miller Co., Missouri in 1866.  Her youngest, Lemual A. was also
2 CONT born in Missouri in 1867.  The family then left Missouri
2 CONT sometime between 1872 and 1874, passing through Arkansas,
2 CONT remaining in the state till 1876.  By early 1876, the family
2 CONT had made its way to Texas and had settled in Wise County.  Then
2 CONT in early 1882 the family moved once more into Indian Territory.
2 CONT We find them scattered throughout the territory, particularly
2 CONT in the southern half.

1 NOTE Strong evidence lends itself to the assumption that this is
2 CONT Barnabas's father.  Mathew Arthur, Sr. was also a veteran of
2 CONT the Revolutionary War.  He participated in several land
2 CONT lotteries in Georgia and was given additional draws because he
2 CONT was a veteran.  9/20/98: Further research shows that he
2 CONT performed military service with the Georgia Militia between
2 CONT 1792 and 1796. His service  was as a Spy with a Scout and Spies
2 CONT Unit of the Georgia Militia.  However, according to a book
2 CONT written by Alex M. Hitz, 1966, titled: "Authentic List of All
2 CONT Land Grants Made to Veterans of the Revolutionary War by the
2 CONT State of Georgia" Mathew is listed as having received land in
2 CONT 1827.  I have not had the opportunity to view any of the
2 CONT written records, as yet.  Have sent to the National Archives
2 CONT for a copy of his military service records, hopefully this will
2 CONT turn up some interesting information. NOTE: The given name of
2 CONT Mathew comes from the Talbot side of the family. Mathew Talbot
2 CONT is the father of Martha Talbot, the mother of Mathew Arthur.

2 NOTE Barnabas ARTHUR was born in 1735 in Virginia. He died on 2 Mar
3 CONT 1815 in Bedford Co., VA. Linwood Arthur is the source of much
3 CONT information on this part of the family.  According to the will
3 CONT of Barnabas(4th child of John and Rebecca Arthur of Goose
3 CONT Creek), his wife was Nancy; from Bedford County Deeds we find a
3 CONT Barnabas with a wife named Elizabeth who was still alive in
3 CONT 1802.
3 CONT It is believed by some that Barnabas married Second to Nancy
3 CONT Williamson, 3 Jan. 1811 as per marriage records of Bedford
3 CONT County, Va. Others have stated that his second wife was Nancy
3 CONT Clayton. No proof for either claim, so all that can be stated
3 CONT for is that Barnabas was married first to Elizabeth who died
3 CONT after 1802 and then married second to Nancy. There were
3 CONT numerous Barnabas Arthurs around Bedford, Campbell and Franklin
3 CONT Counties at the same time, making identification of which is
3 CONT which very difficult

2 CONT claim for  pension, W. 5636, based on the military service of
2 CONT Thomas Arthur in the  Revolutionary War.

2 CONT The date and place of birth of Thomas Arthur were not shown,
2 CONT nor were the  names of his parents stated, however, it was
2 CONT stated that he lived in Bedford,  at the time, between the
2 CONT waters of Goose Creek and Staunton River and was of  the family
2 CONT of Arthurs that lived in that, now the south, part of Bedford
2 CONT County.

2 CONT He served as a private of militia with Virginia troops as
2 CONT follows:
2 CONT 
2 CONT (1) In the fall of 1778, he was regularly drafted and served a
2 CONT tour of three months duration at the Lead Mines on New River in
2 CONT Virginia (now Wythe County) under Robt. Adams as captain and
2 CONT Thos. McReynolds as lieutenant.  The troops left home (in then
2 CONT Bedford County) on or about the latter part of August or the
2 CONT first of September 1778, and after having performed said tour
2 CONT of service, he was regularly discharged about the latter part
2 CONT of November or the first of December 1778.  He served this tour
2 CONT with John Pribble (Campbell County),  Joe (Hundley ?), Reuben
2 CONT and Nathl. West.  (editor's note -- Reuben West was married to
2 CONT a Nancy Arthur who probably was the same Nancy Arthur who was
2 CONT Thomas Arthur's sister).  Thomas Arthur was a man about five
2 CONT feet seven inches tall, and was known, or went by the nick-name
2 CONT of Tom-Titt Arthur to distinguish him from a larger man by that
2 CONT name.
2 CONT (2) In the summer of 1780, he served a tour of about three
2 CONT months at Gates' Defeat  at Camden, South Carolina, in Captain
2 CONT Thos. Leftwich's company of the Bedford Militia.     Thomas
2 CONT Arthur was a small man who served this tour with his brother,
2 CONT John Arthur from about the first of June 1780, to the 15th
2 CONT August 1780, the time of the defeat.  According to the
2 CONT Revolutionary War Pension File # W. 5635 for John Arthur and
2 CONT wife, Elizabeth, this tour of duty was described as meeting a
2 CONT New London, Bedford County, about the last of May 1780 and
2 CONT marched from thence, under said Capt.Thomas Leftwich with Aug.
2 CONT Leftwick as Lieutenant and Danl. Mitchell as Ensign by the way
2 CONT of Disces Ferry on Staunton River to Hillsborough, North
2 CONT Carolina.  The troops remained there six or eight weeks and
2 CONT marched from thence to the Pedee and crossed into South
2 CONT Carolina and by the way of Ruglys Mills to said Camden, South
2 CONT Carolina, and hearing of the British, we set out to meet them
2 CONT and did meet hem at  Camden, SC.  The Americans were commanded
2 CONT by Genl. Gates, in which action at said place the Americans
2 CONT suffered a defeat by the British on the 15th day of August
2 CONT 1780.  The American militia was routed,and dispersed, and
2 CONT returned home not having been organized again for action.
2 CONT (3) In the spring and summer of 1781, he served a tour of three
2 CONT months at the Siege of Ninety-Six in South Carolina.  The names
2 CONT of the officers were not given.  He may have served this tour
2 CONT of duty with his brother, John Arthur, who was marched from
2 CONT Bedford County under Capt. Isaac Clemmans to the fort at
2 CONT Ninety-Six according to Revoutionary Was Pension File # W. 5635
2 CONT for John Arthur and wife, Elizabeth.  John Arthur's file
2 CONT describes this tour as meeting as usual at New London in
2 CONT Bedford County about the 1st of June 1781.They marched to 96,
2 CONT SC, where the Americans entrenched themselves under Genl. Green
2 CONT outside the British fortifications and remained there the best
2 CONT part of two months, fighting part of the time, and trying to
2 CONT make the British surrender, but they held out until they had
2 CONT reinforcements sent them, and then the Americans had to retreat
2 CONT into North Carolina where the militia to which he belonged was
2 CONT discharged about the last of August making three months that he
2 CONT served at the Seige of 96.  This file also states that both
2 CONT John and Thomas Arthur were small men and brothers.
2 CONT (4) In the fall of 1781, he served a tour of a little over two
2 CONT months in Captain Nathan Read's company guarding the magazine
2 CONT at New London in Bedford County.  (editor's note -- After the
2 CONT War, Bedford County was divided into two parts, Bedford and
2 CONT Campbell Counties.  The county seat was moved from New London,
2 CONT which was then near the dividing line between the two counties,
2 CONT to Liberty which is today Bedford).

2 CONT It was stated that his nickname was Tom Titt in one of the
2 CONT declarations, but in his wife's statement, it was stated that
2 CONT he was called Squirrel Tom to distinguish him from another man
2 CONT by the same name.
2 CONT The soldier, Thomas Arthur, married  29 November 1782, in
2 CONT Bedford County, VA, to Sarah (Sally) Dixon.  The date and place
2 CONT of her birth and the names of her parents were not given.  Two
2 CONT of her grandsons, Admire and Armistead Arthur, were witnesses
2 CONT to her declaration of 15 June 1843.  (editor's note -- This
2 CONT might lead one to believe that Thomas and Sally Arthur lived
2 CONT very near to the homeplace of Henry and his sons, Admire and
2 CONT Armistead Arthur.  It was also stated in one of these

1 NOTE Mathew Talbot, Gentleman, as he was known in his time was
2 CONT doubtless born in 1699 as that is the year given without
2 CONT exception in all written matter concerning him which is known
2 CONT to your compiler. Several references go further and give
2 CONT September as the month. It is consedered the preponderance of
2 CONT evidence warrants conclusion that 1699 is the correct year and
2 CONT that September is probably the month of his birth.It is known,
2 CONT however, that on May 5th or 6th, 1720, 1721, or 1722, Mathew
2 CONT Talbot, Gentleman married Mary Williston who was born 1697.
2 CONT His bride was the daughter of James Williston, Esquire, of the
2 CONT Province of Maryland, described as being "a large land owner."
2 CONT One infers that the wedding took place in Maryland although
2 CONT nothing proving this to be so has been found in any of the
2 CONT State or local records studied in Maryland nor in any of the
2 CONT few existing church records of the period. This theory is
2 CONT strengthened by the fact that James Williston's last will and
2 CONT testament was probated in Queen Anne's County on the Eastern
2 CONT Shore of Maryland.  His will was dated 9 January 1708, and it
2 CONT shows him to have been of Kent Island, Queen Anne County.  By
2 CONT this instrument, James Williston bequeathed to his son George,
2 CONT 119 acres of land "called Lancaster lying on ye south side of
2 CONT Chester River" in Queen Anne County.  In this same document, he
2 CONT left his daughter Mary (then about eleven years old and who
2 CONT later became the wife of MathewTalbot, to the care of his wife.
2 CONT Moreover, one finds subsequentl y that Mary Talbot as
2 CONT administratrix for George Williston, "late of Queen's County"
2 CONT swore on "July ye 28th 1726" to the correctness of the
2 CONT inventory she submitted of her brother's estate. Finally, we
2 CONT have the words of his grandson, Edmund Talbot, who states the
2 CONT Mathew Talbot settled in Maryland and married Mary Williston,
2 CONT the young couple later moving on into Virginia.  Thus it may be
2 CONT accepted that Mathew Talbot and Mary Williston were married in
2 CONT the Province of Maryland, despite the lack of official records:
2 CONT that theory is further substantiated by the facts that the
2 CONT first child, Charles Talbot, was born in 1723 in Maryland.
2 CONT It is clear that Mathew Talbot and his wife did not remain long
2 CONT in Maryland however, as the next two children, Mathew, born 27
2 CONT November 1729, and James, born 7 November 1733, first saw the
2 CONT light in Bristol Parish, Prince George's County, Virginia.
2 CONT While in Maryland, Mathew is believed to have been interested
2 CONT in shipping along with his partner, Nicholas Hale (Haile?),
2 CONT Esquire, who is said to have come from Buck's County,
2 CONT Pennsylvania and was probably of the distinguished colonial
2 CONT family of that name.  This same Mr. Hale presumably went to
2 CONT Virginia with the Mathew Talbot's for later on his daughter
2 CONT married Mathew Talbot, the second son.  The best authority yet
2 CONT found by this compiler dealing with this part of the life of
2 CONT Mathew, is his grandson, Edmund Talbot, whose statement was put
2 CONT in writing by the latter's son, Mathew.  It is from this
2 CONT document that we learn that Mathew was involved in shiping and
2 CONT that is was losses at sea which caused him to turn his back on
2 CONT Maryland and strike out for what is now Virginia ith his young
2 CONT family.
2 CONT 
2 CONT In Virginia, Mathew first made his home in Amelia County, later
2 CONT settling nor far from the present-day city of Lynchburg where
2 CONT at least two of the direct descendants of Mathew and of his son
2 CONT Charles were still living in October 1949.
2 CONT 
2 CONT It will be recalled that the time that Mathew Talbot went to
2 CONT the Province of Virginia, it extended northward to the shores
2 CONT of the Great Lakes and westward to the Mississippi.  It was not
2 CONT until 1784, after the Revolution, that Virginia ceded the
2 CONT Northwest Territory to the Federal Government of our new-born
2 CONT nation, while Virginia did not give up the region we know as
2 CONT Kentucky until 1792.  Even before the arrival of Mathew in
2 CONT Virginia, however, the gradual movement of other pioneers
2 CONT westward away from the shores of the Atlantic, brought about
2 CONT subdivision of great tracts of land.  For convenience of
2 CONT control and to obtain proportionate representation in the
2 CONT Virginia House of Burgesses, (the first representative assembly
2 CONT in North America and established in 1619), newcomers of the
2 CONT early 18th century demanded and eventually succeeded in having
2 CONT several counties caraved out from the older and larger ones.
2 CONT Thus it was in 1732 Brunswick County was created from Prince
2 CONT George, Surrey, and Isle of Wight.  Then, in 1746, B unswick,
2 CONT in its turn became the parent county for Lunenburg.  In
2 CONT November 1753 by act of the House of Burgesses effective 10 May
2 CONT 1753, a new county called Bedford, named in honor of John
2 CONT Russell, Duke of Bedford, was established on land originally a
2 CONT part of Lunenburg plus a small section of Albemarle County.
2 CONT These facts tend to create confusion in attempting to follow
2 CONT the movements of Mathew Talbot, for we find records pertaining
2 CONT to him in various counties in different periods of his life in
2 CONT which the locations were probably the same, only the name of
2 CONT the county that embraced them having been changed. After study,
2 CONT however, one concludes that between 1723 and 1729 both
2 CONT inclusive, he moved with his family from Maryland to southern
2 CONT Virginia in the region just south of present day Richmond (laid
2 CONT out in 1737): and that about 1737 he went to an area south and
2 CONT southwest of Lynchburg (established in 1786) settling near the
2 CONT modern town of Bedford (established in 1782) in the county of
2 CONT Bedford where he died in 1758 on is plantation.

2 CONT That the land on which Mathew Talbot settled permanently was
2 CONT eventually encompassed by Bedford County, is evidenced by
2 CONT several deeds recording purchase and sale of lands by him, now
2 CONT (1949) on file in the Bedford County Court House.  The original
2 CONT of his last will and testament may also be seen and examined
2 CONT there.  Unfortunately, the age of the paper on which it was
2 CONT written and the fading of the ink made in impossible to have it
2 CONT satisfactorily photostated and published as a part of this
2 CONT brochure.

2 CONT It is obvious from the numerous existing records pertaining to
2 CONT his activities that Mathew Talbot became a respected leader in
2 CONT the civic, religious, and military affairs of his world.  We
2 CONT read that "Mathew Talbot, Gent." was one the justices of the
2 CONT County Court which incidentally, held its first meeting (5 May
2 CONT 1746) at his house.  Even before that by three years, Mathew
2 CONT Talbot was concerned in administration of the law as is shown
2 CONT by the minutes of a Council held at the Capitol, 6 May 1743:
2 CONT "Present: The Governor, William Boyd, Cole Diggs, John
2 CONT Robenson, John Grymes, John Custis, John Taylor, Philip
2 CONT Lightfoot.  Ordered.  That a New Commission Issue for Brunswick
2 CONT County and that Mathew Talbot be Added."

2 CONT Talbot homestead in Bedford County until November 1754 when a
2 CONT "rude structure" was erected for county purposes.

1 NOTE You sent me some information on Thomas Arthur and asked for any
2 CONT information about his being in a militia. I ordered from
2 CONT Interlibrary Loan "An Old Virginia Court..." by Marshall
2 CONT Wingfield with the records of the first court of Franklin
2 CONT County, VA, from 1786 (when the county was formed) to 1789.
2 CONT There are references to Thomas Arthur since his property was in
2 CONT Franklin Co. after it was formed from Bedford Co. In Feb. 1786
2 CONT (p.10)  there is a reference to him as a captain in the
2 CONT Franklin Co. militia.
2 CONT In July 1786  (p. 23) he was promoted to Lieut. Colonel. In
2 CONT June 1788(p. 130) he was promoted to Colonel. From property
2 CONT records, it appears that he was rather a wheeler-dealer in
2 CONT property. He owned some slaves, quite a few horses and cattle,
2 CONT according to tax records. In May 1786, according to Wingfield,
2 CONT Thomas Arthur wrote a letter to the governor of Virginia in
2 CONT opposition to the appointment of Hugh Innis as colonel of the
2 CONT militia. (You probably have a copy of this as I think Lois
2 CONT Arthur sent it to me.)
2 CONT 
2 CONT Hugh Innis was a lawyer, one time sheriff of Franklin Co., and
2 CONT seemed to me probably politically powerful. Therefore, it is no
2 CONT surprise that after  Thomas Arthur wrote the letter to the
2 CONT governor, his troubles began - accusations of forgery, taking
2 CONT more money from the till than he was entitled to, etc. Were the
2 CONT accusations true or were they motivated by  political revenge?
2 CONT I don't know. After his move to Knox Co., KY, he organized and
2 CONT built the first Baptist Church at Flat Lick on a hill across
2 CONT from his house (or log cabin?). In 1791 he was arrested in
2 CONT Franklin Co. but I haven't yet located the court record giving
2 CONT the outcome. However, after that and the same year he quickly
2 CONT sold his remaining property and his slaves. He did own a slave
2 CONT named Luse (Lucy) and I wonder if she was the same one he had
2 CONT in Knox Co. As you probably know, in his will, he gave his
2 CONT slaves their freedom.

2 CONT According to census records, his youngest child was born in TN.
2 CONT The tax  record of his being in Knox Co. is 1800. I haven't
2 CONT been able to substantiate his TN residency though it's
2 CONT certainly possible he was there temporarily.

2 CONT The only other information of Thomas Arthur's being in the
2 CONT militia is  from the DAR records which state that he was a
2 CONT militiaman in Capt. Cobb's Company from Bedford County. The
2 CONT year would have been (from what I have been able to find)
2 CONT 1778-1779 at which time he was 19/30 years old.

2 CONT Wingfield also wrote a book on the history of Caroline County,
2 CONT VA,and since that was where Thomas Arthur was supposedly born
2 CONT (although the DAR record says he was born in Bedford Co.) I
2 CONT wonder if there would be any information on him.
