Mid-term Take-Home Exam

Last Updated:  11/07/2002

This is a take-home exam.  Therefore, I expect tutorial-type essays.  Each should be written in tutorial form, that is clearly and concisely with strong concrete support.  I will offer a 20 point extra-credit objective quiz on Thursday.  These essays will be turned in to me, typed and clearly identified on Thursday, November 14th.  NO late papers will be accepted, so turn it in early if you're going to be "out of pocket" that day.

Essay 1: Game Schema and Credibility

1.      Compare Jack Fuller’s definition of news to  Charles Prestwich Scott’s definition of the function of a good newspaper.   How do the differences in those definitions shed light on why the public distrusts and dislikes media and why coverage of events like elections disintegrates into game schema coverage?  Be sure to thoroughly discuss the definitions and components associated with them.    (This essay should run about 2 pages, typed.)  (20 points)

Essay 2: Semiotics and Political Communication

Discuss the visual and verbal components of televised political communication, especially in debates, and how television has affected political communication in advertising, news media and debates. (This essay should run 1 to 1 and a half pages for 10 points)

Essay 3:  Media and Democracy

Discuss the assumption: "As a result of the democratic process in this country, the most qualified candidates are nominated and elected," and the three assumptions which lead to that one.  (10 points -- 1 to 2 pages)

Essay 4: Media Bias

Discuss the issue of media bias. Does it exist and if so, in what ways?  If it does exist or is perceived to exist, what effect does that have on the perceptions of media news?  (30 Points- 3 to four pages typed)

Essay 5:  Rules and Strategy

Discuss the current gubernatorial race in terms of Carvelle and Begalla's "RULES"  (Strategy -II) and specific strategies addressed in your text (Strategy I).  Which ones were employed by the candidates before the election and which ones are they using now as we await the final determination and resolution of the race? (30 points- 3 to 5 pages)
