Dear parents and students,
Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year.  I hope you and your family had a wonderful summer.  I am looking forward to working with your student in Precalculus this year and I hope to influence him/her both educationally and as a positive role model.
In order to ensure an educational environment in the classroom, I have developed the following guidelines:

  1. Rules and policies expressed in the 2012-2013 Code of Student Conduct as well as Austin High School rules will be enforced in the classroom.
  2. Students will bring the following material to class each day:  textbook, notebook, Austin High School Planner, paper, pencil, and graphing calculator.
  3. Students are to use the Planner to record daily assignments as well as dates for tests and quizzes.
  4. On the third tardy to class, the student will be written up and sent to the office.
  5. All make-up work is to be completed within 3 days of the students return to class.  If the student has been absent for an extended period, special arrangements will be made.  It is the student's responsibility to ask for make-up work and arrange for make-up tests.
  6. Clean up after yourself.
  7. Show respect for everyone in the classroom.
  8. Attend to personal needs before or after class.
  9. Math class is to be used for math work only.  You may work on other subjects only after your math work is completed.

Course Synopsis

Analytical Mathematics is a course designed for students who have successfully completed the Algebra II with Trigonometry course.  It is considered to be parallel in rigor to Precalculus.  This course provides a structured introduction to important areas of emphasis in most postsecondary studies that pursue a concentration in mathematics.  Linear algebra, logic, vectors, and matrices are topics that are given more in-depth coverage than in previous courses.  Application-based problem solving is an integral part of this course.

Prerequisites
Algebra I
Algebra II/Trigonometry
Geometry

Grading System and Classroom Procedures

  1. Daily work and homework will count 25% of the six-week grade.  Math is not a spectator sport!  Homework is vital.  Assignments are due on time.  There will be no credit given for late assignments.  If you are absent, check the class calendar, website, or phone a classmate.  A student with an excused absence has three days in which to make up the work.  Unexcused absences earn a grade of “0”.
  2. Tests will count 75% of the six-week grade.  Quiz grades will be averaged together and count as one test grade.
  3. Make-up tests will be given before or after school.  It is the student’s responsibility to arrange a time for the make-up test within three days of the absence.  A test not made up will be assigned a grade of “0”.
  4. Mathematics is a process.  Do not get behind!  I am available before and after school.  Please let me know in advance if you need help.  Work must be shown on all homework and test questions!
  5. All work is to be done in pencil.  Work done in ink will not be accepted.

7.         Final exams are comprehensive and count 25% of the semester grade.
8.         Student progress can be monitored through the use of INow.

Academic Misconduct

The penalty for academic misconduct (Class 2.19-Honor Code Violation) will include assignment to In-School-Suspension (ISS), a “zero” for the exercise or activity, and the student will become ineligible for semester-exam exemptions for the current school year.

Notebook/Homework

All homework and class notes are to be kept in a three ring binder.  It is the student’s responsibility to get this notebook as soon as possible and keep it up to date.  The notebook must be brought to class each day.
WORK MUST BE SHOWN ON ALL HOMEWORK AND TEST PROBLEMS!!!  Circle all answers.  Include the following information on all homework assignments:  Name, date, class period, and assignment.

Materials

  1. Three ring binder
  2. Pencils
  3. Ruler
  4. Graphing calculator (Students will be allowed to use calculators on homework, class work, and tests.  Students must provide their own calculators.)
