Cigar Box Guitar FAQ

In the DVD...

  • What song do you play at the end? How do you have your CBG tuned?
That's an old Muddy Waters song "You're gonna miss me (when I'm dead and gone)", tuned DGBD. I go into a lot more detail about that song in the PLAY THE CBG MP3 (2.4M) here.
  • I can't find Piezo elements like you use. Where can I get some like that?
The piezo buzzer that I use in the DVD was round and was not in a plastic case. I cannot find them without the plastic cases anymore. You can still use them in the plastic, in fact it helps to protect the fragile piezo crystal on the disc that way. I sell the ones that I use now in the Cigar Box Guitar Emporium, and I've heard from people that use them that they produce more output than piezos of the same size. If you like, yes, you can remove the plastic housing around the disc. Just be carefull to not damage the piezo element as you do that.
  • The bolts that you use for the nut and bridge, are they attached to the CBG in anyway?
Actually, no. The string tension holds both the nut and bridge bolts in place.
  • What kind of bolts did you use?
For the nut end, I used a machine screw with a round head for a typical slot style screwdriver. I had to hacksaw this and file it down to size to fit properly. I tried several different bolts for the DVD and found one close, but I still had to tweak it just a bit. On the bridge end, I used a hex headed bolt and a hex nut to create a tune-o-matic looking bridge. The hex shape on the nut and bolt prevent the bridge from rolling around, and the fact that it's held in place by just string tension means that I am free to adjust the bridge to correct the intonnation.
  • What strings did you use on the CBG?
I used a set of electric guitar strings, the D G B and E strings from a set of light gauge strings (9's). Yes, you could use any 4 strings that you like. I just prefer this type of string.
