The Descendants of John P. Stewart
The following is information I have gathered about John P. STEWART, my ggg-grandfather, and
his descendants to the present day. I didn't include any persons after my grandfathers generation
so that I wouldn't have anyone's info on the web who was still living. I have also included
my mothers side of the family who were all european immigrants in the early part of
this century.
I am trying to link this STEWART line into the
larger STEWART family residing in Monongalia Co.,WV,
which is where John P. turned 21 and was married. John P. would have been born around 1820 and
died October 15, 1895 in Ritchie Co., WV. He married Rebecca NEELY in Monongalia Co. on March 9, 1848.
When he turned 21 he was listed in the tax lists on Monongalia Co. living near
John (Esq.) STEWART and
John (Esq.)'s father
William STEWART.
Both of these STEWARTs are part of the larger STEWART family
living in Monongalia County. John P. is not listed in William STEWART's will as either a son or grandson
of William. John (Esq.) and his half-brother
Milton are listed as selling land to John P.'s
father-in-law John NEELY, who lived near John (Esq.) and Milton, which implies some close relationships
between these families since John P. married John NEELY's daughter. In the 1850 US census of
Monongalia Co. John P. and Rebecca were living near her father John NEELY and John (Esq.), Milton
and William STEWART. Sometime after 1854 John P. and Rebecca moved to Ritchie Co., WV. Rebecca's
father John NEELY and the rest of his family seemed to move to Ritchie Co. also at about this same time.
In every census I have looked at (1850, 1860, 1870, 1880) John P. and Rebecca are listed as being born
in Virginia (now West Virginia).
William STEWART mentioned above had two brothers who married in Monongalia Co. at the right time to
be the father of John P. STEWART. There names were
David and
Samuel STEWART. I am concentrating
on these brothers as the possible father of John P. because that would give a family relationship
to William, John (Esq.), and John P. and would explain why John P. isn't listed in William's will.
I have not been able to find David or Samuel in any census of Monongalia Co. They both seem to have
disappeared after they were married. David's wife's name was Nancy BARKER and they were married in
1812. In the 1850 census of Monongalia Co. there is a Nancy STEWART living with the William STEWART
mentioned above. She was 66 at the time. Could this have been David's widow, William's sister-in-law?
It is hard to tell because William also had a sister named Nancy.
This is the point at which I am currently stuck. I am still trying to find David and Samuel somewhere.
I am still trying to link this family to the larger STEWART family of Monongalia Co. but I haven't been
able to do so yet, but I am close.
