Alexander Stewart's Will
(from Monongalia Co., WV Wills, Vol. 2, p.53)

In the name of God Amen. I Alexander Stewart of Monongalia County and State of Virginia considering the uncertainty of this mortal life have thought proper to make this my last will and testament hereby revoking all wills made by me. First it is my desire that my heirs hereafter named give my mortal remains a decent and a christian like burial after debts are paid which is but few the worldly estate of which I am possessed is to be disposed of in the following manner via: First, I give my beloved wife Scynthia Ann Stewart the mansion house with one hundred acres of land more of less for her support and comfort during her natural life, together with the household and moveable property, and the children which I have by the present wife shall have their support and common schooling of the land and equally divided among them. Thirdly, the real and moveable property that was left for her support, at her death shall be sold at the best and highest bidder and equally divided among my children, Joseph Givens Stewart, Daniel Marian Stewart, George Washington Stewart, Margory Stewart, Kurrinda Catherine Stewart, Sarah Elizabeth Stewart, Ann Virginia Stewart. Fourthly, I impower my wife Scynthia Ann Stewart one year after my death to sell as much moveable property as to pay Martha Bowen twenty five dollars, and also Eliza Doyal twenty five dollars. Fifthly, Sidney Stewart her bed and bedding. Sixthly, Margory Stewart her bed and bedding and cow and heifer and ___ and saddle. Seventhly, the rest of my sones Joshua Brown provided for Joshua Stewart, William Stewart, Alexandrew Stewart, John Stewart, Joshua Brown provided for them. And I will and bequeath to Joshua Stewart one dollar, one year after my death, William Stewart one dollar one year after my death, Alexandrew Stewart one dollar one year after my death, John Stewart one dollar one year after my death, Nancy Bailes one dollar one year after my death, Susan Mikes one dollar one year after my death, Rebecca Wright one dollar one year after my death.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this Seventeenth day of September Eighteen hundred and forty six.

At a County Court heard in and for Monongalia County April term 1858. The last will and testament of Alexander Stewart, deceased was this day produced in court, duly proven by the oaths and examination of William Robison and John Smith, Subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be admitted to record.
