Terrain Analysis & Digital Mapping References
Terrain Analysis
  • FM 5-33 US Army Field Manual, Terrain Analysis -- Prescribes the basic doctrine for Terrain Analysis and is intended to serve as a primary source of the most current available information on Terrain Analysis procedures for all personnel who plan, supervise, and conduct Terrain Analysis.  The manual discusses the impact of the terrain and the weather on operations.  Alternate source.
  • FM 5-170 US Army Field Manual, Engineer Reconnaissance -- describes how engineer recon teams support and augment a maneuver battalion or brigade's recon effort. It is designed as an engineer extension of FMs 17-95 and 17-98. This manual serves as a guide for both brigade and task force (TF) engineers, as well as for subordinate leaders (especially recon team leaders) in planning, integrating, and conducting recon operations. It also serves as a guide for the brigade and TF staffs and subordinate maneuver commanders on the organization, capabilities, and employment of engineer recon teams.  This manual sets forth the principles of conducting engineer recon activities supporting a maneuver brigade or TF. It addresses engineer tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) that highlight critical principles. However, the TTP are intended to be descriptive rather than prescriptive; they are not a replacement for the TTP and standing operating procedures (SOPs) that are unique to the supported uni.
  • FM 3-34.230 US Army Field Manual, Topographic Operations.  Excellent resource discussing all phases of terrain analysis and the products and techniques used to perform the analysis and disseminate the information to the soldier.  Describes doctrine for topographic operations in support of the US Army's strategic, operational and tactical missions.  See also FM 3-34.331 Topographic Surveying.
  • FM 3-06.11  -- US Army Field Manual, Combined Arms Operations in Urban Terrain.  Formerly FM 90-10 Military Operations in Urbanize Terrain (MOUT).  Discusses Urban Terrain Analysis
  • FM 5-430-00-1 Planning and Design of Roads, Airfields and Heliports in the Theater of Operations -- Road Design Volume 1.  Includes informative chapter on trafficability analysis of the soil and vehicle interaction with the terrain.
