Preventing Child Abuse through Education
in Jackson County, Alabama, since 1981

THE SCHOOLS PROGRAM is the heart of Friends of the Family. Trained volunteers go into 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 8th grade classes in Jackson County and Scottsboro City Schools. Scripted questions are used for structured discussions. Our volunteers do not counsel students or give their opinions. We
explain what child abuse is, emphasize that a child is NOT at fault for any type of abuse, and encourage students to talk to a trusted adult who can help.

THE RESOURCE CENTER is a public lending library housed at DHR, in a room accessible from the lobby. It contains videos, DVDs, books, and pamphlets that may be checked out by anyone in the community. It is regularly used by foster parents, social workers, teachers, counselors, and students. A complete list of materials in the library is now available on this website.

Friends of the Family began in 1981 as a community service project of the Jackson County branch of the American Association of University Women. It was incorporated into an independent, non-profit human services organization with a board of directors in 1992.

Friends of the Family is supported entirely by grants and donations. THANK YOU for your continued support!
