Notes for James Roy SMITH
He graduated from college with an engineering degree. He served in World War I and stayed in as an Army engineer until his retirement. In 1925 he married Ruth Copsey of York, NE. She was the daughter of a local banker. Their only child was
stillborn. Ruth was a kindergarten teacher when they lived in Chicago. The two of them clothed and fed poor children in the school.
In college he roomed with a student named Young, and James was given the knickname "Joe" and it stuck for the rest of his life.
He designed the first concrete army buildings at Ft. Sill, OK and the natural gas system for Chicago.
They moved to Mission, KS in his later life. After he died, Ruth moved to Boston to be near her nearest relative, a niece.
