3.1 Liter Turbocharged V6.

Various component modification and testing

I didn't take as good of notes during my original turbo system build-up. These pictures are about all I have of this system.

The engine started life as a carbureted 2.8l Chevy-built 60º v6. It is the engine removed from my sadly deceased 83 Century. I planned on rebuilding it anyway, so changing from a 2.8 crank to a 3.1 crank was easy. The pistons are available in several compression versions, and I choose the lowest for this turbocharged application, of course! C/r is about 8:1.

The carb was ditched in favor of a metered-air EFI setup from a junk Cavalier Z24. EFI takes boost so much better!

I drove this car well over 100,000 miles with this system and it was reliable and quick. It saw many US states (including the Florida everglades region), parts of Canada. It was never once behind a tow truck.

You may notice how the cowl panel is broken, in the top picture. This happened 2 weeks after I had the car running, and new paint. I was on my way to work, at 9:00 in the morning, and hit a damn buck deer that weighed as much as I do! Did $1500 worth of damage by basically tearing off the whole front end, and causing the hood to blow up and break the windshield. The hinges broke the cowl The deer did the "Exorcist Neck," when we found it (thrown several yards from the road) its neck was twisted at least 180º! Yep, I had a perfectly painted car, for two weeks... If you want to see the images I took to show my insurance adjuster, click here. Caution: You will see a dead deer, a bit of blood.

Home is where the HEAT is!
