Travel and Your Aquarium

NOTE: The automatic feeder is electric. You use one AA battery and it lasts around 4 weeks. You just have to put the flakes in and set how much you want it to feed every day. There are some automatic feeders with a compartment for each days feeding if your fish have a special diet. The weekend and vacation feeders are dissolving tablets that are in the shaped like a shell.

If you go traveling and you don't have the proper devices for your fish tank your fish will either die or have a lot of stress. To keep your fish at acceptable standards when your gone. I have an automatic feeder that I got from Wal-Mart that was about 20 dollars. There are less expensive feeders that you can find if you look around.

The other option is to get a weekend feeder or for long vacations a vacation shell. With the weekend feeders all you do is drop the shell in and your fish will be fed for 2-3 days. The vacation shell is a larger version of the weekend feeder. I think the vacation feeder will feed for 4 weeks. I use the weekend feeder and automatic feeder. It would be a good idea to add extra water to your aquarium before you leave so the level won't drop too low.

The next thing you will need (if you have a plant) is a timer for the light. The best place to get this would be a home improvement store, a department store, or an appliance store. You may want to set it to be on for about 10-12 hours. The light is very important for the plant to keep it alive.

Before you go change the water first. You need to change the water before you leave for long trips. Changing the water will help assure that your fish will not have any stress. Before you leave make a checklist or something to make sure everything is on and working.
