What is your A97/FPS/FPO history?
In the past it was required that you delete the FC apps before
installing new ones.
The new HSM's create a real problem in that you
install the new apps on a new or hard reset device (after having
used a palm before), and the HSM will reinstall the old apps
during the 'total restore' (backup buddy emulation) portion of
the first hot sync. - probably what happened to you- And it does
not matter if you did a Palm uninstall just prior to installing
FPS 7.3 or FPO 1.4. If you reuse the same username on the Palm,
it did not delete that usernames backup when you uninstalled!!!!
I would try, if it were me, deleting the
applications on the Palm. Performing a HotSync. Then using the
Palm install tool, install the version you will find in the
/add-on subdirectory. Then HotSync twice. That should straighten
both your Palm and the backups, out.
BTW: There is a more severe manifestation of
this problem, if you are upgrading to a device with a different
version Palm OS. You can get a fatal error lockup that you cannot
clear on the Palm. This is the result of an incompatible hack or
Launcher version in your previous usage. If you have this
problem, there are different ways of solving it, depending on the
specific situation. Post your froms and tos for
both versions and devices.
While just one opinion among many, I hope this
information was helpful...

Just went by the Stevenscreek web site and
guess what.... they have a custom version of UnDupe for the the
Franklin PDTL/Task List application.....
I don't need the custom version any more... but
others may.
Yep, got a new computer at work and FPO is NOT
installed.
Gosh, the speed of the hotsyncs is amazing and the absence of
dupes in normal usage. (The installation of the Outlook links for
PocketMirror created some, but, the standard undupe cleaned it up
nicely with NO orphaned records!)
FREEDOM AT LAST!
Feels GREAT, too.

Coe,
Did you install PocketMirror 3.0? Chapura added
some new features that address some of the idiosyncricies of
Outlook and more sync options to control your sync. So far no
problems with their upgrade. If only FC could learn from this.

OK. But, I find no documented limitations on
the number of conduits.
Where is the limitation enforced, on the palm
or on the desktop?
What is the max # conduits permited?
Has anyone on this webboard been affected be
such a limit?

My Palm Programming book from O'Reilly does not indicate that
there is a limit in either number or in space. It does go into
detail on the differences from the old registry brute force
method of setting one up versus using the new conduit manager
dll, though.
(It does list a considerable number of 'rope' graffiti shortcuts
that I have not posted, yet, though.)

Subject: New Palm apps (First Impressions)...
From: Terry Oplinger, Jr. <trojhome@hotmail.com>
Date: Mon, 20 Nov 2000 10:00:00 -0500
I did get my copy of the new Palm apps, and
they installed easily enough. Now that I've used them for a
couple of days, I thought I would share some musings.
- Speed: The obvious issue. Anytime any
application touches the PDTL database, the app is VERY slow. I
noticed an appreciable difference in the speed of the PDTL app
when loading. (5 seconds to see the FC logo, 8 seconds for data.)
I currently keep 6 months of data on the Palm. Suggestion: Have
the FC logo appear immediately. A blank screen is a little
confusing... An unknowing user may not understand what is
happening to keep the Palm from responding when the screen is
blank. The logo is an indication of something happening. Once the
PDTL is loaded, it's still slow, why? (Try editing a note on a
task, when you are DONE it will take the same 8 seconds to load
the list.)
- Speed: The Agenda view for the Appointment
Schedule is also very slow... see notes above.
- Wasted space: Why did the priority format
change?... Instead of "A1" it now displays "A
1". The extra space isn't really needed for readability (my
opinion), so why change it?
- Colors: Excellent... but one criticism. Why
did you change the text color? Why not do like FPS and have the
background change, keeping black text. It would be immensely
easier to read. Currently this can be difficult to discern the
text on the white screen.
- More Colors: Why doesn't the category color
follow on to the Agenda View? It should.
- Agenda: I like that I can choose the task
status on the Agenda, but there are missing choices. Or more to
the point...
- Task status: What happened to the status
choices that were once there?... Big omission here. This should
have never changed. The Task List now does not allow for:
In-process complete, Delegated complete, or Forward complete.
This should be addressed ASAP. These are important to those of us
who use FPS... So, please... Add functionality, don't take it
away.
- Details: I like the new layout for the
details screen, however there is a question about % Complete. How
is this applied? Do you sync this to FPS? Or, is this an Outlook
item? If I sync a percentage, will it calculate based on the time
I have setup in "Estimated" on the FPS Task? ...By the
way, delegate designee still does not sync.
- Minor change: Put the FC logo/menu on the
Agenda View. I know that there is space to the left of the time.
This would allow us to jump to the other apps quickly. And
displaying the FC logo before processing would help notify the
user that something is happening.

You have to email a request to FC tech support.
According to FC they will not be put on the web site. But the
reason given was they don't want just anyone downloading it - it
must go only to FPS 7.something customers.
Doesn't make much sense to me, unless it's
because two apps are not integrated into a packaged 'install
& verification process' like the FPS 7.3 update.

Hmmm.....
Well, they seem to co-exist with Datebk4
without problems. The Datebk4 view is much better than the
ApptSced view and has the ICON extensions that FC does not
support. Stupidity(?) or just lack of common human interface
sense still seems to reign in implementation though. Go to a past
or future date in the agenda view and select a task to view the
details on --- oops, that would be what you would EXPECT it to
do,,,, it doesn't, it jumps you to today!
The PDTL addition of the navigation was long
overdue, but, I concur on the "A 1" change. I do not
understand the color comment, though, Terry. The percent complete
does not match the Outlook numbers for those tasks back in
history and in fact a forwarded task went from 1 to 47 to 0
percent complete on three sequential forwards. That could be the
result of the field not Sync'ing until the new version, though.
(Since FPO is no longer loaded my PDTL is stand-alone on the
Palm.)
Even their for $$$ (and premium ones at that)
palm FC handheld app suite seems to lack significant content
compared to what is available as free/shareware.

I noted that like the 'missing' private control
of long ago, there is no reverse control in setting the color.
Any bets that the setting is a bit flip in the palm... and quess

This past weekend I had an opportunity to take
a look at the new Suite now available from FC for Palm and
Personal PC devices.
Although I found that most of the tools were
available easily enough through other channels (New FC apps from
FC Support, other apps from PalmGear, etc), I did notice
something rather disturbing.
There are new books available in this suite.
However the three original books available for the Palm are not
converted for the PPC. What's more discouraging is that the three
new books are only available on the PPC... why?
Seems to me that if you converted these
documents for use on one platform, it shouldn't take more than 10
minutes to translate it for the other platform.
Seems much like typical FC. Market a product
that isn't quite ready, get some revenue, then maybe fix it
later... much later. So the big question is, when will the new
books be available on both platforms?

Some would and some would not plus it depends
on whether you are using FPS or FPO. For FPS, Your Palm becomes
the transport mechanism. Task List and DRE/DRoE are unique
applications and that information would not transfer while
Address and Calender information would.
For FPO, to get to Outlook you use the .pst
files, to get to DeskTop you use the Palm, again Task List and
DRE data will not transfer.
The sequence of events and actions depend on
your exact situation and your from-to configurations.

it is creeping up towards a "must have" rating, from
me.
While just one opinion among many, I hope this information was
helpful...

Well, it used to, anyway. It is about to start
charging for the service and AvantGo already provides the same
capability as SnapShot.
Going back down the list to 3 stars.

Subject: OK let's jump (uninstall FC)
From: David McNish <dmcnish@charter.net>

I have made the decision to uninstall FC apps
from Palm. But I have many questions before starting the
process...
1) Palm OS v3.5 vs FC Palm apps
I have already upgraded (thanks FC) ToDo, Address, Datebook, etc
to 3.5. Are the only FC apps the Compass, DRE, Goals, Mission,
MTL, Roles, TaskList, and Values?
2) Can FPS stay on the PC (just for goals,
vaules, etc)? (No intent to sync to the Palm or use the address
book etc). (If they can't, no big deal, it's the principles not
the software that's important.)
3) What about the Palm desktop?
Did this come on the FC CD-rom? I've downloaded the new version
from Palm.com, can't I just use it instead?
4) What about existing info in the DRE and
TaskList? Can it be printed out? Is that it? No exporting (I
didn't see any)? I do have W2Kme and Access2000.
5) What exactly are the steps?
...sync one last time
...backup one last time
...remove FC apps from Palm
...uninstall FC from the desktop
...install the new Palm desktop
...sync
...IS THAT IT?
6) What about HotSync?
Is this a pure Palm app or is the copy that comes on the FC cdrom
hacked to only work with FC apps?
My apologies for the number of questions but
I've had it with FC and am ready to join the rest of the Palm
community.
Thanks in advance for all help.
David

Good questions, and I can't wait for the
answers. I would like to add a question - assuming I don't want
to keep anything to do with FPS on my Palm, how do I replace it
with the Palm desktop without losing all my data? Assume I do not
have the desktop software - can I just download from the Palm
site?

The v4 Palm desktop is here...
http://www.palm.com/support/downloads/palmdt_4.html
I think (?) Palm charges for the 3.5 upgrade
http://www.palm.com/support/35upgrade/
If you were an FPS user (my sympathies) you can
upgrade to 7.3 and that should provide the latest 3.5 Palm apps.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Here is what I did and how it turned out.
1) sync'd Palm to the FC desk app one last time. THEN REMOVED
PALM FROM THE CRADLE.
2) used FC desk util to backup twice
3) I *DID NOT* remove the FC apps from the Palm (just
experimenting)
4) Copied all the \Franklin\Palm PRC files to a safe place along
with the backups
5) Uninstall FC desktop app.
6) Downloaded and installed the Palm v4 desktop
7) Fired up the Palm desktop
8) Changed the HotSync setup so the Palm overwrote the desktop.
9. Sync'd
It appears that my address book, and memo's
came across undamaged. Of course I wasn't using the standard ToDo
app so nothing happened there. Likewise, none of the FC TaskList
items came over (didn't expect them to).
Actually, I'm glad that all I have to do is
manually transfer the MTL to a memo. Will be a good review.
For the more technical on the forum... here is
the sync log...

For now, the Values, TaskList, Roles, Mission,
MTL, Goals, DRE, and Compass apps are still on the Palm.
What does everyone suggest as replacements?
**If anyone has any suggestions or warnings,
please advise ! **
Wish me luck.

This morning I installed the Palm desktop on a
laptop running NT 4.0 fixpak 6.
So far so good. It sync'd without any issues.
The only install issue is our laptops are
normally setup without Admin rights. As developers we have
limited admin rights. I installed using my local admin id, and it
works under that, but won't work under the normal signon id. I
get...
Error: Invalid configuration. Terminating the
Palm Desktop.
I'll advise if I get this figured out.

Well actually even Palm Desktop requires the
admin rights. Here is a trick...
Our system had our NT computers set for:
Network Admin (MIS),
Network User (USER me),
Local Admin (no network access but accessible by me)
And MIS just stood firm that if it took admin
rights to install and use the program - you were out of luck...
Well,...
As a local admin, you have the rights to designate a user as
having local admin rights...
gosh... that gives USER-you local admin rights and network
access... Which is all you need. You don't need to be a network
administrator to run the program...
(MIS folks can be so near sighted at times)
While just one opinion among many, I hope this information was
helpful...
