Subject: Installation Nightmares

One might think that FC software is becoming infamous for not
providing complete and comprehensive installation instructions.
Hint 1: If you have installed Ascend or FPS before and use a
Palm, you must manually install the updated/new Palm
applications. It will not be done automatically. BE SURE TO
REMOVE (DELETE) FROM THE PALM THE OLDER VERSION BEFORE USING THE
PALM INSTALL TOOL TO INSTALL THE NEW APPS.
Hint 2: For Palm users; the HotSync that is installed/updated
when FPS/FPO/A97 w/palm files selected during FPx installation,
will destroy pre-existing conduit links. Be sure to have (saved
elsewhere) copies of your other Palm application PRC files. It is
usually better to completely remove/uninstall all Palm software,
install FPx, then reinstall other applications.
Hint 3: Visit the FC Technology Forum and review the FAQ,
Classic Posts, and support conference for your product before
installing.

Subject: (A97/FPS) Saving Window, Tasks, Notes settings
From: Coe CWCJr <cwcjunior@juno.com>

For the Show Notes, Show Tasks, and 'last window sizes
settings' to be saved, the screen must NOT be maximized when you
close it.
Unmaximize, stretch the window to the size you want,
Set everything up the way you want it,
then close FPS(A97).
Now, when you reopen it, your settings should be maintained.
While just one opinion among many, I hope this information was
helpful...

Multiple Computers one Palm -Foolproof- sortof
Ok, there are possibilities that you may have home and work
configurations and user profiles that will allow you to use the
FAQ (found on the FC Forum) method of copying the USER.DAT file.
However, it is just as likely that you don't. Here is the
foolproof (ha ha) sequence to prevent duplications. It has severe
usage restrictions, but, it works - as far as I know - I use it.
Rule 1 - Your Palm only syncs with one computer at a time and may
only be used in conjunction with that computer until you perform
this procedure to transfer your usage of the Palm to another
computer. (works for 1, 2, 3 etc computers.)
Rule 2 - You may only use (edit) FPS on the computer that is
set to sync with the Palm.
(Viewing data is ok. However, for editing - see rule 4 - auto
forwards are considered edits so turn it OFF to be safe.)
Rule 3 - You may not use (edit/enter data on) your Palm when
transitioning between computers.
Rule 4 - Failure to follow 1 thru 3 will result in duplicates,
lost data, and/or loss of category/linkages in the database.
Rule 5 - YOU are responsible for coordination of usernames.
This process will actually allow all computers and the palm to
have different usernames. It will prompt you during the restores.
Procedure:
1) Hot Sync with computer A.
2) Backup to Floppy using Tools & Utilities.
3) you may not use (Edit/Enter data) FPS on Computer A again
until resync with A.
4) you may not use (Edit/Enter data) your Palm again until
after it is resync'ed with some computer.
(You MAY use them with each other, but if you do you must
restart from 1 again before going to another computer.)
5) Restore the backup to computer B using Tools and Utilities.
6) Set the HSM to "Desktop overwrites Handheld" for
all FC Apps, Datebook, and Address/Phone.
7) HotSync with the Palm.
8) Verify no warning messages were issued. If so go back to 5.
9) You may now use FPS and your palm, HotSyncing normally with
computer B, provided you do not change the same record on both
platforms between regular hotsyncs.
10) When ready to go to another computer consider the computer
you are currently using "Computer A", then go to 1)
While just one opinion among many, I hope this information was
helpful...

Subject: Replacing that old Palm device...
From: Terry Oplinger, Jr. <trojhome@hotmail.com>
Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2000 13:55:00 -0500
Did you get a new Palm device to replace that old one? Well
here is how you get the new Palm device up and running with FPS!
- Backup your data, BACKUP YOUR DATA!, BACKUP YOUR DATA!
- Hotsync your old Pilot
- No need to reset the new pilot unless you've already tried to
hotsync... only reset if there is a registered user in the new
Pilot
- Change all the conduits in HSM to DO NOTHING... except for the
'install' conduits. Set those to ENABLE.
- Go into the Palm Install tool and select all the apps to be
installed. You will find all your apps in;
X:\Program Files\Franklin Quest\Planner\Palm\Add-on
- or in -
X:\Program Files\Franklin Covey\Planner\Palm\Add-on
- Hotsync and you will install all the applications... be
prepared for a long sync. Sometimes (most times) the HSM will
automatically backup your apps and this takes a while. If you
notice that is seems to be going into a loop of backup/install,
backup/install... you can cancel the sync
- If the backup of apps did loop, look for a BACKUP folder in the
Palm path listed above and delete everything there (folders and
files)
- After the first Hotsync, go back into HSM and change all the
conduits to Desktop Over Handheld
- Hotsync and all your data will be transferred to the new Pilot
- Check the HSM settings to make sure they returned to Syncronize
Enjoy!

.5 Clears the User Name
.7 which will switch through the battery types-Alkaline,
NiCad,Rechargable ALkaline, and NiMh. This is for OS 3.3. I think
OS 3.1 only has Nicad and Alkaline. (Thanks to Jay D.)
.8 Toggles the Backlighting Method
The 'looped rope' Shortcut symbol, followed by a double tap,
followed by the number
(I think?)

Ric also provides this one:
Warm reset.
Hold down the 'up' button while pressing the reset button in
the back. This will load the Palm OS without loading any third
party apps.
I don't really know what it does differently following a power
off or a subsequent reset, but, if you are heading for a hard
reset anyway, you might try this first.

Do you have print Forms or Queries that work with the A97/FPS
data base?
Do you know how to modify the forms in FPO to add the ability
to link previously created tasks to roles/goals/mission
statement?
etc, etc, etc.....
If you can describe the process or export it to a file and
submit it for downloading by others (use the Submit to Ageless or
with Images/Attachments), please do.
If necessary I can even set up a method for submission and
posting with complete anonymity, EVEN from the managers and
admin! (But then if you ask, I guess I WOULD know who asked for
the 'key'.... oh well.)
Well, all registered users of the board got the instructions, so,
now even I can't know.
I do NOT encourage anyone to violate a use license, but, it is
time all our individual capabilities were pooled to get the
maximum capability out of the s/w we PAID for (some of which was
actually ADVERTISED as being there, but isn't - or at least
wasn't when the catalog was published and/or the products were
being sold in the store (ppc support).)

Subject: (FPS) Linking Roles and Goals to Tasks
From: Anon Y'Mous <noone@nowhere.com>

FPS LRG and Role linking, using Access
Have you ever defined a task then wanted to have it linked to
one of your Long Range Goals or Roles. Well, in the task editing
mode, there is no option to assign that link. Here is how you do
it using Access on your database.
To start, always 1)make a copy and 2) do a backup just before
performing these edits, just in case) The techniques are similar,
it is just the table that you use that is different between the
two modules.
For Role linking:
The tables of interest in your .mdb data base are
"TASKS" and "FQRole". I would recommend
OPENning the FQRole table and just printing it out. The items of
interest are the Serial Number and the RoleName.
Now, open the TASKS table. One approach you can take is to
just link the last copy of the task of interest (simple), the
other is to link all copies of the task (very intensive, if you
have forwarded it a lot of times). The principle is the same. The
fields of interest are the Description and the RoleLink. What you
want to do is to find the description of the task you want to
link, look up the rolename in the FQrole table, and enter that
Role's serial number in the RoleLink for that task's record (make
sure you are on the correct task by selecting the record before
panning to the right to find the RoleLink field - it is the last
one. After you make the entry, just close the data base - Access
is a real-time data update style data base. The only time it
should ask you if you want to save an update is when you have
altered a field definition or display format (usually you will
have increased the size of a column so that you can see more of
the information in the field), I always say NO.
LRG works the same way, except it is the next to last field
and the Goals information is in the FQALGoals table.
1) If you use a Palm it will not save to the Palm, unless you
restart FPS and make some other minor change to the task to flag
it as needing updated. (You could play with the task's sync
flags, but, that is NOT recommended.)
2) An interesting oversight? by (censored) the authoring
company was that in the tasks edit field, it will only display
the Role or the LRG, not both. So if you link a task to BOTH an
LRG and a role, only one shows up in the Task edit screen - to be
honest I have forgotten which gets displayed.
3) BE VERY CAREFUL that you do not edit anything other than
what you intended. If you do, restore the backup.
4) Could a query be developed to simplify this? In my
experience if you add forms or queries to the database in Access,
FPS does not care and will continue to operate, however, that is
not proven.

Subject: (A/A97/FPS) Date conversion Constants
From: Anon Y'Mous <noone@nowhere.com>
Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2000 14:22:00 -0500
The date conversion constants have been posted on the FC board
in Classic Posts for quite a while. Coe solved it and Tech
Support posted the information, but, it is sort of hidden by the
title of Import Contact History.
If you want to make use of several of the tables in the A97 or
FPS database or perform some repairs on Ascend 4 and 5 data, you
need to know what the date numbers stand for.
The conversion constants are:
693960 to go to the 1900 based system (used by Access and
Excel) and
695422 to go to the 1904 based system (used by Parens and an
option in Excel)
You subtract these from the Ascend number to get the
Access/Excel/Parens numbers.
March 29, 1998 is
729843 in Ascend
35883 in Excel/Access 1900
34421 in Parens/1904 Excel
Not posted there you might also note that:
Times and durations are either seconds, seconds from midnight, or
(A97/FPS for Palm synch) seconds from midnight january 1, 1970.
