HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Jungki Lee of Huntsville won his second consecutive Alabama state table tennis championship on Saturday defeating Chip Patton of Madison 21-18, 21-12 in the finals. Lee defeated Jason Denton of Trinity 11-21, 21-13, 21-16 in the semis while Patton was eliminating Adam Brown of Riverchase 21-12, 21-10. Top seed Homer Brown of Riverchase was ousted by his 17-year-old son Adam in 2 straight games 21-18, 21-19 in the quarterfinals. Lee and Patton teamed to win the championship doubles title over the Brown team 21-9, 21-12. Lee and Patton defeated Mike Wetzel of Moulton and Barry Putman of Attalla 21-18, 21-17 in the semis while the Browns defeated Phil Thompson of Stevenson and Tommie Dailey of Birmingham 21-15, 21-14 in the other semis. The USATT-sanctioned tournament featured 34 players from throughout the state. It was sponsored by TGIFriday's Restaurant and hosted by the North Alabama Table Tennis Club. It marked the 15th consecutive year, Huntsville has hosted the event at Brahan Spring Recreation Center. "Like always, the competition this year was fierce," said tournament director Michael Wetzel. "There were some great matches played in all events. It was good to see eight juniors compete for the title. Without a doubt, Birmingham's Adam Brown and Julian Vermund are the top juniors in the state. We are expecting big things in the future from both of these youngsters. Another youngster playing well was Sonya McNeal of Fairfield. She successfully defended her state crown in the women's event. I can't remember the last time a woman has done that at the state level. She was pushed by her sister Sheila and Trussville's Sheila Gray. We are all encouraged by the number of juniors and women participating at the state competition in the past few years." "Everyone was watching top-seeded Homer Brown. It was Homer's first state tournament since moving to Alabama from the Northeast and the other top players knew he would be the person to beat. He easily advanced out of the preliminaries and unfortunately had to face his son in the quarterfinals. Adam seemed to know his game and defeated his dad in two close and exciting games. It was probably the best match of the entire tournament." Quotes from 2-time state champion Jungki Lee, 37, Phd in marketing, professor at Alabama A&M, native of S. Korea, style of play: lefthanded, penhold grip, superior looping top spin and counter attack game. "I knew it would be difficult winning again this year. With players like Homer and Ralph in the field, I was fortunate to survive. Chip had just a great tournament and I knew I had to play him tough in the finals to win it all again." Chip Patton, 35, technical manager at Intergraph in Madison, 2 masters degrees (math/computer science and management), co-tournament director, 3-time top 5 finisher in past state tournaments, worked as scorer at 1996 Olympic table tennis events. Style of play: righthanded, shakehand grip; quick on his feet; pips out racket on his backhand; top defensive player in the state, top lobber in the state; deceptive serves. "I wasn't sure if I would be ready for the state because of a nagging shoulder injury. When I got into the playoffs and knocked off Ralph Kissel (3-time former state champ, 21-17, 21-15) then saw Adam had eliminated his dad. I felt like I had a chance to win it all. Jungki was just too strong for me today. We play in the same club and he usually beats me. It was nice to win the state doubles title. It will be something to always remember."
