d. Everything is BINARY FILES on the WEB

All collections of information are transmitted in binary format on the World Wide Web.

A file is a collection of information
It has a UNIQUE combination of filename & address
It is useful - Only if it can be located
Every computer on the Internet is UNIQUE
A Unique Combination of Name, Domain, & Country Code
Your PC interprets information using stored instructions
Protocol is agreed upon between Host & Client

e. e-mail

e-mail is a separate area on the Internet

e-mail uses it's own addressing system
e-mail can contain embedded objects
May be sent as a Web Page
It may contain embedded graphics and sounds
May have binary attachments
Has software to assist in managing messages
Is informal
May use it's own filing system
Usually has a personal address book

f. Common file formats

Many companies create and sell all types of Applications (Software for You and your Processor). Each application uses it's own instructions for encoding and decoding the stored information. These instructions are know as the Format or Form of the information in the file.

g. Down Loading and Up Loading Binary Files

All files, no matter what format they are encoded in, are transmitted as Binary Code over the Web portion of the Internet.

All files your Browser displays are Downloaded to your RAM
Your Browser either displays them or asks you for disposition
You can save the file to storage on a disk or open it
Sometimes you may wish to download a file and not have it displayed . . .
You can use ftp (File Transport Protocol) software to do this
Modern browsers contain ftp instructions
Executable files do not display
Executable files can contain viruses
Save them to a folder
Check them before you execute them
Temporary Internet Files

h. Using Software to manage files on a remote HOST

File Transport Software allows you to manage files on a remote host provided you have the necessary authorization.
For most PC users their Internet Provider issues them an account password and provides limited file space on their server.
This is where you can store information for others to retrieve.

ftp Software for Uploading & Downloading

Use of Directories/Folders
Public Directories (Anonymous Login)

EXAMPLES OF ftp SOFTWARE

The following examples are from commercial software; freely shared versions are available. It is commonly known as "Ws_ftp".

This first view foil is an example of the Session Profile. This is where you establish the ftp link with your provider, in this case huntsvilleal.com. Notice all the choices you have. This is a very popular software application.

This second view foil shows how a ftp session works. The Directories of your computer's files are on the left (Local System), the right side is the directories of your (client) files on your provider's (host) computer (Remote System). Notice the two transfer arrows in the center. After you select which directory and files you wish to move and select the destination directory you execute by one of these arrows. The status of the transfer appears at the bottom of this window.

Remember to be able to use this file transfer procedure you need:

ftp protocol software
A shell account on another "remote" computer (Proper permission),
this is usually your ISP's server.

We will demonstrate usage of this software if it is available in the laboratory when we look at publishing Web Pages in session 7 (Uploading Binary Files)
