Task 1 - Sign Creation

Create and store a graphical image of a common arterial stop sign. Store the result on a floppy disk in a Bit Map Format (.bmp). It is recommended that other signs also be created to explore other capabilities of the software...

Learning Objectives:

a. Learn the Basic Graphic Concepts.
b. Review file management concepts.
c. Use of the "PAINT" tools.
d. Use of Multiple Drawings.
e. Copy, Paste, and Resize.
f. Opaque vs. Transparent.

Open the Paint Application and start a new drawing.

Open the View dialog box and insure that Tool Box, ColorBox, and Status Bar have check marks.
Hint: To get you started here is one suggestion for generation of an Octagon.

a. Draw a square with 242 pixels per side.
b. Open another paint application and construct a square with 71 pixels per side.
Then place two straight lines connecting the opposite corners.
c. Select this new smaller square and copy it to the clipboard.
d. Use the Window command on the menu bar to switch to the larger square.
e. Paste and drag each of four copies of the smaller square into the inside of each of the four corners of the large square.
f. Zoom in on each of the four corners and use the erasing tool to remove the pixels not required for the Octagon. (Be sure the Octagon is a closed figure.)
g. It is a good idea to save your work at this time. If you make mistakes in the future you do not have to go all the way back to square one. (Put your completed Octagon in a temporary file.)
h. Fill the Octagon with the color of it's outline, then fill it with "RED". This results with a red figure with no outline on a white background. (If you did not start with a white background you can change at any time.) Hint for placement of the text "STOP".
i. Open another Paint application or use the one you used to construct the smaller \tab \tab square. Remove the smaller square if it is there.
j. Set the foreground color to BLUE. Select the TEXT tool.
k. Under the Options command be sure that the Draw Opaque is checked.
l. On the View Menu turn on the Text tool bar and drag it to the lower right hand side of the viewing area.
m. Draw a rectangle which is 242 x 71 pixels. This is the desired size for our text. It is a construction guide. You now need to experiment with various text sizes and fonts to get one which resembles the sign you desire. All caps in Arial, Narrow with Bold and size 72 is one which seams to work.
n. Once you decide on the text and it fills your construction guide rectangle reasonably well, you need to clear your scratch sheet and place the text "STOP" on there in some color other than red or white.
o. Select the text and copy it to the clipboard.
p. Switch to the window containing the Octagon and paste the text.
q. Position the text inside of the Octagon.
r. Change the text color to White.
s. The result should closely resemble a STOP SIGN. Save the file to a floppy disk and bring it to class.
t. Try to make other signs.

WELL DONE

What happens when you copy and paste your sign over another bit map object?
Is this the result of drawing Opaque?
What and when should you use this option?
Did you achieve the learning objectives?
Can you find another way to create the same result?

There are many easier ways to create a similar result. This approach was chosen to allow you to explore many of the PAINT application's features.

Be ready to discuss the PAINT Application Software next time. It is the basis for all graphics applications. Other applications grow out of it, they have more options and provide the user with more choices. In the next class we will study the ways to make Greeting Cards with common word processing applications.
