You should postpone serious obedience training until the puppy/dog is approximately 6 -8 months old. Prior to this age they have little power of concentration, and intense lessons will just confuse them. As a general rule of thumb, teething puppies are too young for serious obedience training. Before you begin to train your dog, purchase a training (choke) collar and a leash. The correct collar size can be obtained by measuring the dogs head around the largest part, then add 1". the proper way to put the collar on is with the loose ring to the right of the dogs neck, the chain attached to it coming over the neck and thru the holding ring, rather than under the neck. A collar placed like this will work correctly, since the dog should stand at your left during training. Let the dog get used to the collar by wearing it a day or two, but always while under your supervision. Now snap the lead onto the collar and let the dog drag it around watching that it doesn't get tangled. When you feel that your dog has accepted the collar and lead, pick up your end and walk around for awhile, applying little or no pressure.
