July 6 2003 - Today I started to reassemble the
engine bottom end since I have gotten the Cad plated hardware back from the
platers. The photo below shows the oil filter upgrade I ordered from Bench Mark
Works. It has a machined adapter plate and utilizes a common $4.00 oil filter.
Notice the magnet stuck to the bottom to trap any metal filings in the filter.
The next photo shows the filter dropped into the
engine
Next, I installed the new gaskets, the oil pump, oil
breather tube and plated hardware.
Since I had the filter and oil pump
installed I decided to check out the three oil passages. I filled up the oil
reservoir with about 1/2 a quart of oil and started to turn the oil pump shaft
by hand. Oil spurted out of the front two passages pretty good but just bubbled
out of the rear carrier bearing passage. I ran a small wire down the passage
and oil them came up nicely along with a few pepper sized flakes of debris.
This is probably something good to do every time an engine is rebuilt, as you
do not want your bearings oil starved from during initial turn over.
September 16, 2003 - I am starting to get parts back
from Ed Korn. The first package contained the new pistons (78.43mm) and rings.
The box is marked JP (An Australian manufacturer)
I also got the re-bored and powder coated cylinders.
They look good. The only thing that was not done that I requested was to
replace the broken exhaust studs. I don't know if he forgot or could not do it.
I am going to email him to find out. I guess I will carry it to a local machine
shop I use to get them replaced. I now have to locate some 8mm x 1mm studs to
replace them with. The powder coating looked good overall. There were a couple
of spots in the air passage between the cylinder and valves that got missed
with the coating. I may spray some hi-temp black up in the gap to prevent rust.
I have not gotten the crankshaft back. I
imagine it will be following in the next month or so.
