Unfortunately, I can't direct you to every single intersting or helpful site on the Web Thingy - I mean, what do I look like, a search engine? (Okay, maybe a little, but I’m trying to lose weight!) But here are a few other sites you all might enjoy. Thank you, won’t you?
Writing!
The Round Robin Storybook
is home to a series of stories which are written, piece by piece, by different
authors, including yours truly. First, take a look at what
we've already done - and if you think you've got the literary chops,
you can sign up and take a crack at it!
If you prefer your writing to be a bit more free-form, there's an interactive adventure site known as Sir Toby's Never-Ending Quest. It's an extendable story you can add on to.
Most of know certain phrases, such as To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose, are from the Bible - but whereabouts? The Bible Gateway Search allows you to find passages from the Bible, and in several different versions and languages. The answer, incidentally, is Eccclesiastes 3:1.
Randomness!
Life is kind of random, isn't it? In that spirit, here's a site that will whisk you away to a random location somewhere in cyber-wherezis. There's no telling where URouLette will take you, so have your passport ready.
Other randomness available: Visit a random page on Geo-Cities; see who’s keeping the streets safe as They Fight Crime; check out what's happening at... someplace... via a Random Camera; or dig up your own trove of randomness from Yahoo's list of Random Things
Day By Day!
Each and every day, a new, nifty site is served up by the crew at The Cool Site of the Day (and the horrible non-word kewl is nowhere in sight).
Sounds are the thing at The Daily .WAV, and lots of 'em! Get 'em fresh off the wire!
The World Birthday Web - Who's having a birthday today? Who shares your birthday? Find out here - and stock up on birthday cards!
Speaking of today, here's a little spot in Maryland that lets you see what went on Today in History (including noteable births, deaths, and other milestones).
Tools!
Feel like whipping up your own web thingy home page, but don't know where to
start? A good spot is here, at the Professional Web
Design HTML Tutorial.
HTML? What's that, some federal agency? Does the terminology of the web confuse you? Bring you down? Cause unsightly tartar build-up? Make you lose your hair? (That's what happened to mine - honest!) This Internet Glossary might help. Well, everything but the tartar and the hair loss. Sorry.
How many people currently live in the USA? More than you might think.
Is the US government deep in it for a pile o' money? You Betcha!
MapQuest! can give you a map of any city in the US down to the street level (hey, if they've got Hartselle, Alabama, they've got just about anywhere!)
Nifty and Weird Toys!
Did you know that in Fairbanks, Alaska, it's illegal to feed alcoholic beverages to a moose? Or that Australian taxi cabs are required to carry a bale of hay in the trunk? Or that it's illegal, right here in Alabama, for a driver to be blindfolded while operating a vehicle? Your tax dollars at work, folks! All this and more at a site devoted to dumb laws.
If you've ever wondered, "Gee, what would the results be if an iron meteorite measuring 118 meters in diameter smashed into one of Earth's land areas at 21.3 kilometers pere second?", then not only do you have a great future in Hollywood, you'll find the answer at this site for Simulated Solar System Collisions! (For the record, it left a 2.3 km crater at the South Pole)
Do you like anagramming? Then try Anagram Fun. You'll like it, or my name's not Ill Gin Nibs Volt.
The Universal Currency Converter lets you convert between several different national monies, including US Dollars, Canadian Dollars, Japanese Yen, Finnish Markka, Silver or Gold (or Platinum!) ounces, Malaysian Ringit, and even Euros.
If you're a numismatist, you've probably already been to the official site for both the U.S. Mint (where they design and make all the nice new coins) and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (where they design and print all the ugly new paper money).
And just because it represents what you can really, truly accomplish with the Web Thingy if you apply yourself - here's The Hampsterdance!
