The sit: Description: this exercise has many practical applications. Make the dog sit while you are fixing his dinner. Make him sit as you go out the door to keep him from bum-rushing you. Make him sit when company comes over, instead of jumping up on people. Sit is an invaluable lesson for your dog to learn. Action: take a treat and hold just in front of your dogs nose. Move the treat over their head and back toward their rear very slowly. The dog should rock back on its haunches and sit. As soon as that fuzzy butt hits the floor, click and treat. When you notice that your dog is coming up to you and sitting and looking at you, you know he has the idea and then you can put the exercise on cue. Tips: Work with your dog in small frequent sessions at home. Work these actions into his daily routine and you will find that he learns them much faster. Remember to use your "Jackpot" (an extra special treat, or a few training sized treats) when you really see the lights go on inside the dog's head. When you see that they are really thinking about something and do it right, give them that jackpot!
