Detta, My First Rescue Scottie

While sitting at home one day, I got a phone call from the local Collie Rescue. They had just gone to a shelter in a neighboring town to pick up a rescue dog, and noticed that there was a Scottie there, so they decided to call me. I was in the middle of a move, and was moving to a place that I didn't have room to keep a rescue dog, so I declined. I just couldn't same them all you know. The very next day, I get a call from another lady, at a local Grooming shop. She said a client had come in that morning and mentioned that she had been to the same shelter looking for her missing cat, and had noticed the Scottie, and decided to mention it to the Grooming shop owner. Then they called me. That was it. Something was up...it was a sign. So I decided to go to the shelter and have a look.

She was pitiful. Her eyes were runny, she was missing all the hair from her shoulders back. But she seemed perky and in good spirits. Straight to the Vet's we went. She was running a fever and the vet suspected she might be coming down with distemper. I have never known my vet to pull a dog through distemper, they always eventually have to be euthanized. So I took her back to my mothers house and crated her in the garage for her quarentine period. I came and let her out 4 times a day to exercise and feed and medicate. I had her on asprin for her fever, mineral suppliments, a hypoallergenic diet, vitimin C and some tissue salts to help her condition. I walked her out away from the house and carried a quarter strength bleach solution with me to disinfect. I decided to name her Detta, because she owed me a great debt.

Meanwhile, I was looking for her a home. It just so happened that the following weekend, there was a dog show held by the local kennel club. There was one lady that always came to our shows and showed her Scotties in Obedience. I cornered her at the show and ask her if she knew of anyone that might want a Scottie? *Hey...Scottie people know other Scottie people, right?* She said there was a wonderful couple who took obedience classes from the kennel club she belonged to that had lost their older Scottie about a year before, and that she would ask. Before the week was out, I got the call. I asked them some questions and they seemed like a good match. They had an older male wheaton, and had been looking for some company for him. I told them I would contact them when I decided she was well enough to go to her new home. She recovered quite nicely and a few weeks later they came to meet her for the first time.

Almost immediately, she took to them. She was running and playing with the other dog too. As they went to leave, they slipped a leash on her, and she never looked back. She went right out and jumped up in the car like "lets go!" She has since had her name changed to Madeleine, and she now has a loving and wonderful family. They have since adopted ANOTHER Scottie from us *see Buster's story* and they are one big happy family.
