Attention: Description: this exercise is to help your dog learn to look to you for guidance. Naturally, dogs don't look their owners in the eye (unless you have a very dominant dog) because in dog language this is considered a threat or a challenge. Domestic dogs can be retrained to look to your eyes and face for guidance, and cues about what is going on, or about to happen. Action: Get down relatively close to your dogs face. Hold a treat in front of the dogs nose, and slowly bring it to your nose. When you notice that the dog is looking at your face or eyes, click count 2 and give your treat. Notice that I didn't give you a command to give your dog. At this point we are reinforcing naturally occurring behavior. We won't put this behavior on "cue" (giving the dog a word to associate with the behavior) until we know that he REALLY knows what's going on. When he's looking at you before you even get the treat out, then you know he's got it, and you can add a word to the behavior. Good words for this exercise are "Watch", "Look", or "Attention," but you may use any word that you choose. Tips: Remember, its only a treat or reward if your dog wants it. Take some time to find something that your dog really goes nuts over, whether its peanut butter cookies, liver, or a favorite toy. Its up to you to know what really turns your dog on.
