What do I get when I adopt a Scottie?

When you adopt a dog from STRNA, you get several things.

You get the security of adopting an adult dog, knowing exactly what this dog will be like, what its temperament and characteristics are and what its personality is like.

You get a well groomed and healthy dog (any known health problems you will be made aware of) one that is free from heartworms, fleas, ticks, and has already been spayed or neutered.

You get an honest and upfort assessment of exactly what this dog is like, inside and out.  If there are any health problems or behaviors that we are aware of concerning this dog, you will be made aware of these things PRIOR to the adoption of this dog. We do our best to screen for behavior and medical problems before we make these dogs available for adoption.  Honesty is always the best policy.

You get a leash and collar, with our personal I.D. tag on it.  Owners are encouraged to keep this I.D. tag on their pet until they can get one with their own information, so if the dog becomes lost in the interim, someone will be contacted if he is found.  Some families even opt to keep our I.D. tag on at all times so that they will be able to have a back up contact incase they can't be reached or their other tag gets lost.

You get a copy of the book Second Hand Dog, by Carol Benjamin.  This book helps to give new owners insight into the "emotional baggage" that many rescues have. How to train and communicate with your rescue dog, and how to facilitate the bonding process with your new rescue dog.

You get the chance to "test drive" our rescues through a series of meetings before you commit to the adoption.  These meetings are intended to familiarize you with the personality of the dog, its habits and behaviors before he ever enters your home.  It also gives us a chance to help you in deciding if this is really the dog that you want.

You get a network of support from us.  We offer a lifetime commitment to all the dogs that we place.  We are here at any time to offer advice on training, behavior, or just to share stories of your new pet with.  We are always here to help for the lifetime of your adopted dog.  They are just like our children, and will always be close to our hearts, and we keep a vested interest in them throughout their lives.

You get a "New Doggy" kit, provided through our partners Petfinder.org.  This kit includes sample treats, informative literature, as well as money saving coupons on pet supplies.

You get a well rounded, socialized, and trained pet.  Even if we haven't corrected behaviors completely, we have formed a firm foundation of training for these dogs.  They are usually housebroken and have good house manners which makes owning a pet less stressful and more enjoyable for you, the new owner.  Most of our rescues at least know sit, down, wait, and how to walk politely on a loose leash.

You get a loving companion properly suited to you, your family, and your lifestyle.  And best of all, you just got to help save a life, which is one of the most rewarding experiences that you could ever have.  Rescue a dog today, you will be glad that you did.
