TWO POEMS

By Ed Button, 12/17/1999

No One Eats a Peach

No one eats a peach for the fuzz,
Nor an apple for its vitamin-rich peel,
So stop saying what’s good for me.
Enough about sinning and salvation, too.

I no longer believe in your God because
I don’t see him in your motivations.
I no longer believe in your God because
I can’t find him in your actions.

(Why should I be always
The one with rosy cheeks?)

What do you mean,
I need read only this Book?
Isn’t that like looking for the lost keys
Under the one lamppost?

I’d rather fumble and stumble in darkness,
Stub my toes and scrape my knees;
Hop around on one foot if need be,
Than be seen a fool in this poor light.

Just now, my flashlight comes to mind.
I’ll cast it about, this way and that,
And move some shadows into
Unaccustomed positions.

**************

It Was A Long Day

It was a long day, just trying to see it through.
Long hours too, seen through this day.
Now comes the hour of darkness -
Night come to steal my sleep.
