For all my research, I still may have screwed up on info related to the health care bill. I'm not sure yet. The possible problem has just been pointed out, and if it is a problem, it arises from the fact that I may have been looking at an earlier, more draconian version of the bill. The version that was passed, for instance, still defines "health care crimes"--but perhaps not 100 pages of them. One person has also disputed the very existence of the medical database. This is very, very tricky. Language defining the database is scattered all over the bill and is so open to interpretation that, until we know more about how this thing is being put into practice, it may be impossible to say what its impact will be. (Me, I'll always take LBJ's advice to look at bills in light of the worst interpretation and enforcement possible, rather than the "best" things that could result from them in an ideal world. The database, as described, is being built, regardless of how vague and fudgy the language of the law is.)
If you feel like prefacing the article with these comments, that would be fine with me. Whatever you're most comfortable with. Since writing "Pearl Harbor" (which one publisher re-titled "Land-Mine Legislation," just to confuse matters), I've also learned that the "deadbeat dads" database and the d*****d biometric ID are even worse than what I wrote. So, as much as I hate to make mistakes, it all balances out.
And the main point is still sadly true--that new federal laws are so big, so vague, so hastily passed that they can be, and are often booby trapped with horrors like the ID card without anyone even knowing about it. Hard to believe it's still America...
I think the next step is to create a new, free America right under the bootheels of the new, unfree America. We must live around and in spite of the control freaks. Even us nice, middle-class/working class folks must become part of a vast, intelligent, peaceful underground. (But peaceful like a rattlesnake is peaceful.) We will outthink them and outlast them.
