File transfer using Anonymous FTP at MSFC

An Anonymous FTP Server is a type of server which handles a special network protocol called ftp (File Transfer Protocol). It is accessed using an FTP client. Examples of FTP clients are: Our Anonymous FTP Server has a public access directory (/pub) under which there are directories for each NASA center.  These directories are used as a drop box and are accessable without a password. It is most useful for transfering relatively large files to remote sites. Disk space is provided on a first-come, first-served basis. The maximum size is 200mB. On occasion, the anonymous or /pub directory fills up and users must wait until a daily automated batch job deletes any files older than five (5) days. Anyone can log in as the anonymous user and read/add/delete the files in the dropbox. There are no access restrictions.

Sensitivity/Criticality Level for this server is "0" which means the inaccuracy, alteration, disclosure, or unavailability of data provided by this service would have a negligible impact on NASA's missions, functions, image, or reputation.

When transferring a file, the sender and receiver should coordinate so that when the file is placed in the /pub/site directory, it can be picked up as soon as possible. This is desirable because speedy deposit, retrieval and deletion minimizes the waiting period for someone else who otherwise might need to wait as long as five (5) days before there is space freed up.

To transfer files, one can follow the steps given here:
(If using a browser such as Netscape, the URL is ftp://ftp.msfc.nasa.gov)

Sender:
  1. Connect to ftp.msfc.nasa.gov using an FTP client (described above).
  2. Login as anonymous and use your e-mail address (e.g., jane.smith@msfc.nasa.gov) as a password.
  3. Change directories to /pub/site directory.
  4. Transfer the file into the /pub/site directory

  5.        OR
Create a subdirectory under the /pub directory and Transfer the file into it
           OR
If using Netscape, drag the file from your desktop to the Netscape window and the file being dragged will be deposited in the particular directory displayed on the screen.
Receiver:
  1. Connect to ftp.msfc.nasa.gov and log in as described above.
  2. Change directories to where the desired file is.
  3. Download the file (Use get command or if using Netscape, Drag the file to your desktop.)
  4. Erase the file (Optional, although the file should be erased if it is not going to be accessed again. This function not available if using a Browser.)
