Have you ever considered the songs we sing in our worship in light of God's Word? Let's look at the first verse of a song we usually sing as an invitation song, "Just as I Am".
"Just as I am!"
We all are sinners, either reformed or not:
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" (Romans 3:23)
"If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us....If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us." (I John 1:8, 10)
"without one plea,"
As sinners, we are (or were) under a sentence of death:
"Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:" (Romans 5:12)
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23)
"Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death." (James 1:15)
"But that thy blood was shed for me,"
God's love is manifest toward us by the sacrifice of His Son. And by the shedding of The Christ's blood, we are redeemed:
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him." (Romans 5:8,9)
"In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;" (Ephesians 1:7)
"In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: .....And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven." (Colossians 1:14, 20)"In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;" (Ephesians 1:7)
"How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?" (Hebrews 9:14)
"And that thou bidds'ts me come to thee."
Christ offers his invitation:
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)
"O, Lamb of God I come!"
Will you not heed Christ's invitation?
"(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)" (II Corinthians 6:2)
