Songs We Sing

Have you ever considered the songs we sing in our worship in light of God's Word?  Let's look  at one song we sing, "There's a Great Day Coming".
Verse 1

"There's a great day coming,"

That great day is the judgement day:
"And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day." (Jude 1:6)
"But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up." (II Peter 3:10)
"For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works." (Matthew 16:27)
Everyone must face the judgement:
"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:" (Hebrews 9:27)
"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad." (II Corinthians 5:10)

"When the saints and the sinners shall be parted right and left,"

"And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:  And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.  Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:"  (Matthew 25:32-34)

Verse 2

"There's a bright day coming; But its brightnes shall only come to those that love the Lord,"

Those that love the Lord look forward to his second coming:
"He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus." (Revelation 22:20)
Because he coming back to get His people:
"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.  In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." (John 14:1-3)
And he will wash away their tears:
"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."  (Revelation 21:4)

Verse 3

"There's a sad coming: When the sinner shall here his doom , "Depart I know ye not,"

"Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?   And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."  (Matthew 7:22)

The Lord is coming back to take vengeance on the disobedient:
"And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,  In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:  who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;"  (II Thessalonians 1:7-9)

"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death." (Revelaltion 21:8)

"Are you ready for that day to come?"

"Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,"  (II Peter 3:11)
